SEEING RED ON MOTHER’S DAY, MAY 14TH….
May 14th is
Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is one of the prominent observances in the
Christian liturgical year, celebrated the fiftieth day after Easter
Sunday. Historically and symbolically related to the Jewish harvest
festival of Shavuot, it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit in
“tongues of fire” upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus as
described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2. Pentecost is often thought of as
the “Birthday of the Church”, as it signifies the unifying of all
believers in Christ, empowered by the gifts of the Spirit, and now
representing Christ’s real presence in the world.
This year, Pentecost
falls on Mother’s Day. We look forward to a service that will
celebrate both the blessings of the Church united, and the blessing of our
Mother’s and those who have been as Mother’s to us.
Please come dressed in
RED on that day! Red is the color of Pentecost and a symbol of Holy
Spirit “fire”. All members of the church, both men and women, will be
invited to accept a red carnation in tribute to their mother, if living,
or a white carnation in honor of a deceased mother. Join us in services on
that special day.
