FINDING YOUR PLACE AT NORMANDY THROUGH A FELLOWSHIP GROUP

Interested in connecting to a new group of potential friends at Normandy UMC?  Finding a fellowship group…enjoying time with fellow Christians in a small group?

At Normandy you may have heard of the Greek Groups.  They were started years ago as Koinonia groups….What is Koinonia?  It is a Greek word that is mentioned 18 times in the New Testament and describes a special relationship in the Holy Spirit between humans and God and persons and other persons.  "It means that my relationship with God and with other Christians is interwoven.  My relationship with God is affected by how I get along with my brothers and sisters in the church, and my love for them depends on my relationship with God.  I can't really love God without loving other Christians, or the other way around."  (1)

In the history of Normandy there was concern that as we grew in size we would find it increasingly difficult to keep in touch with our members in a personal, caring, supportive manner.  In an attempt to make it possible for members to    experience the support of a caring group that small churches have, the membership was encouraged to divide itself into small groups based on the theology of Koinonia and at Normandy we called them Greek Groups.  Since that time we’ve added other Koinonia/small groups without the Greek name, i.e. First Fridays, Mom’s Morning In and a more informal young couples fellowship.

There has been interest expressed in starting some new fellowship or koinonia groups that would mostly likely meet monthly and have the kind of fellowship that would open doors to those in the group being supportive of each other in Christian love and be a link with the members to the bigger church.  Each group would determine their own structure to accomplish the koinonia relationship.

Our community, thus Normandy membership, is very mobile.  Koinonia/small groups can be key to finding your place in the wider fellowship.  Jane and Jon Kinghorn have a special interest in encouraging this movement and would love to hear from you if this strikes a cord with you.  Is it something you’d like to explore?  Call Jane or Jon or the church office to see what’s unfolding.
